Toshiba announces Satellite P50t 4K Ultra HD laptop

With four times as many pixels as 1080p "full" HD, 4k resolution is quickly infiltrating the display industry, already making an impact in the TV market and reaching desktop monitors. Laptop screens are a natural next step, and Toshiba is doing its part by ushering in a new notebook with an optional Ultra HD display.

The Satellite P50t will be the company's first to offer a 3,840x2,160 15.6-inch screen, which works out to a mean 282 pixels per inch. Toshiba says each 4k display is calibrated by Portrait Displays' Chroma Tune software and is Technicolor Color Certified to fine tune the color gamut for the designers, digital artists, and enthusiasts who will be buying this configuration.

Those users will also appreciate the prosumer-quality specs that accompany the Ultra HD display, including an Intel Core i7 processor, AMD Radeon R9 M265X graphics card, and built-in Blu-ray drive. The P50t also takes up 16GB of RAM and offers a 1TB hard drive; while not an Ultrabook with these serious components, it's not quite a behemoth at 4.86 pounds and 1.1 inches thick.

For those with less money, or less need for maximum pixelocity, a version of the P50t with "just" a 1,920x1,080 screen will also be available. Unfortunately, Toshiba did not disclose the price when it announced the laptop's specs, but it's due sometime next quarter in the U.K. at least.
