In digital era, storage media as a important part of electronic product like computer, camera, handphone, IPod, etc. we know 3 kind of storage media :

1. Magnetic Storage

Sample of magnetic storage are harddisk drive (HDD) and FDD .HDD use magnet and motor to read disk.Below advantage and weakness of HDD :

Advantage HDD:

easy to use and familiar in computer user, if any problem or PCB problem can replace with new PCB, more faster than SSD

Weakness HDD:

use motor make easy to break/lock, heavier and bigger than SSD, need more voltage

2. Solid State Storage

Solid-State drive (SSD) and Flash disk are one of Solid State Storage. SSD and flash disk use memory chip as storage media. Below some advantage and weakness of SSD :

Advantage SSD:

Small and flexible, economize electrics(input output operations per second/IOPS high), very taft and anti collision, can work at extremes environment.

Weakness SSD:

New product not yet familiar, difficult to recover data if any problem.

3. Optical Storage

Sample of Optical storage are CD-RW,DVD-RW.

Advantage Optical Storage :

Cheap, no need open computer case to back up data/easy to use.

Weakness Optical Storage :

Easy to break and scratch, limited lifetime.

Until now computer user in the world still use HDD as storage media. HDD capacity start from 10 GB until 1 Tera (1000 GB). While SSD start from 80 GB until 512 GB. HDD price more cheaper and compatible with computer than SSD. But now some manufacture start to develop SSD because good prospect in the future. Toshiba, Samsung, Intel, Kingston already release SSD products.

Intel just release 2 SSD model X25-M with 34nm(nanometer) process technology .Intel claim this model more cheaper and faster than old model. This SSD with NAND MLC basic 25 % lower in latency for faster access than old model (X25-M 50nm).

Model 160GB : IOPS(input output Operations per second) write 8600

Model 80 & 160 GB : IOPS read 35,000 , 250 MB/s

Price model 80 GB : US$ 225

Price model 160 GB : US$ 440

Interface model 2.5” : X25-M Mainstream SATA SSD

Interface model 1.8” : X18-M Mainstream SATA SSD

Beside above model intel also have X25-E line of SLC(single level cell) SSD with long lifetime and good endurance but expensive.

Kingston have 2 series SSD are SSDNow series M and SSDNow series E. Kingston SSDNow use standard interface SATA harddisk drive, but no like HDD, SSDNow very taft and anti collision also can work in extreme environment because no movement part. SSDNow from Kingston also use S.M.A.R.T ( Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) for monitoring integrity and drive quality.
